Energy is essential to powering our homes, businesses, and our daily lives. As Singapore's energy landscape evolves, EMA plays a pivotal role in managing our transition towards a clean energy future while ensuring resilience, sustainability, and competitiveness.
Singapore imports almost all of our energy needs, which makes us vulnerable to global disruptions. Ensuring a resilient energy supply is a national priority.
In his Budget 2024 statement, then-Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced plans to set up a Future Energy Fund with an initial injection of S$5 billion to support energy infrastructure investments and catalyse energy transition projects. These could include undersea cables for importing low-carbon electricity and building new hydrogen terminals and pipelines if viable for Singapore.
EMA has established an Advisory Panel on Energy Supply Resiliency to identify strategies for improving the reliability of Singapore’s fuel supply and energy system. The Panel will advise EMA on strengthening the power system’s resilience to mitigate potential disruptions and uncertainties across the energy supply chain.
To support the power sector’s decarbonisation, the Ministry of Trade and Industry and EMA launched a public consultation in May 2024 on the proposed amendments to the EMA Act, Electricity Act and Gas Act. These amendments are needed to support our energy transition while ensuring energy security and cost competitiveness.
