The event also featured a 500-drone performance. It was attended by then Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Lawrence Wong, and over 300 guests. This captivating display also commemorated the 10th anniversary of the Singapore LNG Corporation.

SIEW 2023 was a testament to the global collaboration and commitment towards a sustainable energy future, and we look forward to continued progress in the years to come.

International Collaborations

EMA promotes international cooperation to exchange best practices and enhance Singapore’s energy thought leadership. There are frequent exchanges with foreign governments, energy regulators, and international organisations, as well as active participation in multilateral fora such as ASEAN, G20, Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), Indo Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), International Energy Agency (IEA) and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

IEA Regional Cooperation Centre

In February 2024, Singapore and IEA announced the establishment of an IEA Regional Cooperation Centre in Singapore. This will be IEA's first office outside of its headquarters in Paris, France. The Centre will be a hub for IEA’s activities in Southeast Asia and beyond, focusing on scaling-up the deployment of renewables and other clean energy technologies, increasing cross-border power-trade, and improving access to finance for clean energy investments.

Building Capacity in Southeast Asia and Asia Pacific

More than 160 participants joined the Singapore-IEA Regional Training Programme on Seizing Opportunities with Regional Power Grids, co-organised by EMA and IEA in May 2023. This event marked the seventh instalment of the Singapore-IEA Regional Training Hub initiative. The training was a platform to share best practices and cultivate expertise in cross-border electricity trading, including the development of subsea interconnectors.

Bilateral Dialogues with Energy Regulators

EMA has regular engagements with overseas energy regulators. EMA and Energy Commission Malaysia held the third bilateral dialogue in Langkawi, Malaysia where discussions were centered on energy transition initiatives and cross-border electricity trading. Dialogues with the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and Federal Energy Commission (FERC) focused on deepening our energy cooperation to tackle challenges in the energy transition and regulatory developments under the EMA-FERC Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2019.

MOU with Asian Development Bank

In July 2023, EMA and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed an Memorandum of Understanding to pave the way for the development of renewable energy generation across the ASEAN region and support the establishment of the ASEAN Power Grid. The MOU empowers ADB to utilise its full suite of products and support ASEAN countries and project sponsors in implementing and managing the risks of clean energy projects in the region.

MOU on LNG Procurement

To strengthen the resiliency of natural gas supply for Singapore and Japan, EMA and JERA Co. Inc., forged a partnership to share best practices and explore collaboration opportunities in liquefied natural gas procurement. This collaboration was marked by both parties signing a Memorandum of Understanding in April 2024.

To promote knowledge exchange on LNG procurement and supply chain management between Singapore and South Korea, EMA and Korea Gas Corporation signed an MOU in June 2024. This partnership will enhance our knowledge and expertise in the management of LNG supply to strengthen our energy security.

Future-proofing Singapore's Energy Grid

Distributed energy resources like solar generation systems, battery energy storage systems, and electric vehicles are likely to proliferate in the coming decades. It is vital to ensure that Singapore's grid infrastructure can support the integration and deployment of cleaner energy sources. To achieve this, EMA and its partners are undertaking projects to future-proof our nation's energy grid.

Enhanced Energy Management System

EMA has commissioned an enhanced Energy Management System (EMS II) with advanced tools and capabilities to better monitor and control Singapore’s electricity transmission network, power generation plants and the natural gas transmission network.

It now comes with new features to forecast solar generation to manage solar intermittency, enhanced cybersecurity features and an integrated intelligent monitoring system to enhance situational awareness and capabilities of power system operators. These improvements will enhance the resilience and reliability of Singapore’s power grid.

Singapore's Largest Vehicle-to-Grid Test-bed

EMA and the Singapore Institute of Technology have awarded a grant to a consortium led by Strides, to develop and test-bed Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology to provide power grid services. This will be Singapore’s largest V2G test-bed conducted with 15 commercial vans and ten V2G-enabled electric vehicle (EV) chargers.

V2G technology transforms EVs into dynamic assets by tapping into the electricity stored in their batteries. This technology allows for flexible charging of EVs in response to grid conditions and enables discharging of electricity back to the grid when needed. This two-way flow of electricity has the potential to improve power system stability by better balancing electricity demand and supply. If successful, the test-bed may unlock the potential of large-scale V2G adoption.
