Going Green and More with Induction Cooking

From higher heating efficiency to being easier to clean, induction hobs offer a myriad of benefits to homeowners.

Choosing between induction or gas hobs is a common dilemma for many households when setting up or renovating their kitchens.

In Singapore, many of us grew up in homes where cooking with gas hobs was the norm. However, induction hobs are becoming increasingly popular as more people discover the advantages of cooking using electricity. In fact, the market for induction hobs in the Asia Pacific region is projected to experience the most rapid growth during the forecast period from 2024 to 2030.[1]

As we shift towards greener energy sources for our electricity supply, the use of induction hobs is also considered by many as a more environmentally friendly option.

Here are the reasons why consumers are increasingly choosing induction hobs over their gas counterparts for their kitchens.

Greater Efficiency

Induction hobs use electromagnetic energy to heat cookware directly, achieving an efficiency of around 80%.[2] This means food cooks faster and uses less energy.

In contrast, gas hobs are not as efficient because much of the heat is lost to the surrounding air during cooking, with only about 32% of the energy used to heat the cookware.

With the higher efficiency of induction hobs, it also means savings on consumers’ utility bills.

Safety Above All

According to the 2023 statistics from the Singapore Civil Defence Force , fires resulting from unattended cooking contributed to the largest proportion of fires in residential buildings.

Induction hobs, with their distinctive direct heating method without any open flames, provide a safer cooking environment, particularly for households with young children and the elderly. There are induction hobs equipped with built-in safety features that automatically shut off when cookware is not detected and/or when it reaches a certain temperature.

Using induction hobs also eliminates the risk of gas leaks which can pose a danger in terms of fire and health risks. However, it is still important to avoid leaving the hob unattended, regardless of the model.

(Temperature) Control is King

Induction hobs come with electronic controls for precise adjustment of the heat transfer to the cookware.

With induction cooking, there is no need for guesswork when it comes to controlling the cooking temperature to achieve consistent results. Induction hobs directly heat the cookware, providing greater precision in temperature control and ensuring consistent heat throughout the cooking process.

Ease of Maintenance

For many of us, cooking is a pleasure but the cleaning up afterwards is a chore.

Induction hobs typically have a sleek glass surface that requires only a wipe-down, making cleaning relatively effortless. On the other hand, cleaning gas hobs can be challenging due to the crevices and intricate parts like grates and burner rings.

The smooth glass surface of induction hobs makes them easier to clean and maintain over time.

Food for Thought

Greater energy efficiency, safety, precise temperature control and low maintenance are some of the key reasons why people are choosing induction over gas hobs. So the next time you have to renovate your kitchen or replace your hobs, induction hobs might be worth the consideration.
