Overview

If you own an electrical or supply installation, you need to appoint a licensed electrical worker (LEW) of the appropriate class to take charge of your installation. The LEW will inspect your electrical installation to ensure it is safe to use before submitting the licence application on your behalf.

Required Documents

The appointed LEW will need to submit the following information and documents for the licence application:

  1. Letter of Appointment (LOA)

  2. Valid electricity account with SP Services or electricity retailer for electrical supply to the electrical installation to be licensed

  3. Single-line drawings A single-line drawing is the plan showing the electrical circuits of the electrical installation. The licensee shall keep a copy of the single-line drawing at his premises.

  4. Supporting documents to show the party responsible for the maintenance of the incoming service cable In cases where the licensee is a tenant, the supporting documents should indicate whether it is the licensee or his landlord who will maintain the incoming service cable to the licensee’s electrical installation.

  5. Consent letter from the landlord’s LEW, confirming that the landlord’s installation is able to support the required load of the tenant’s installation (where applicable)

  6. Location plan of the electrical installation (for a new premises without an official address)

  7. Technical details of generator(s) in a supply installation (where applicable)

 

You or your authorised person* will need to sign the Letter of Appointment (LOA) according to the requirements listed in the table.

Chairman, an authorised member of the MCST or duly authorised agent of the MCST.

If the authorised agent of the MCST is submitting the licence application, he/she must submit a statutory declaration with the following details:

  1. Name, NRIC, designation and the employer (company name) of the person who has been authorised by the MCST to submit and sign the application form on their behalf;
  2. The registered address of the MCST; and
  3. The name and residential address of the chairman, secretary, treasurer and members of the MCST.

*A letter of authorisation shall be attached with the LOA at the point of submission.

Licence Fees

The fee structure for an installation licence is as follows:

Licence Issuance

If your application is complete and in order, EMA will process and approve it within 2-3 working days.

Once approved, both you and your appointed LEW will be notified via email. Your appointed LEW must download and print the electrical installation licence within 5 working days and deliver it to you.

After receiving the licence, you must display it near the main switchboard along with an updated copy of the single-line drawing.

 

Licence Renewal Process

EMA will notify you (the applicant) by post to renew your installation licence 6 weeks before it is due to expire. The notification will include a Letter of Appointment with a licence renewal reference number.

Your appointed LEW should log in to EMA's e-Licence Information Services (ELISE) portal using  the renewal reference number provided to retrieve the installation particulars. After conducting a safety inspection on your electrical installation, they can submit the licence renewal application on your behalf.

Your contractor must appoint an LEW of the appropriate class to take charge of the electrical work. You should ask your contractor to provide the details and contact information of the LEW engaged for your electrical work. You can check the LEW's licence via the e-Licence Information Services (ELISE) portal or their licence card.

No, EMA will not issue an electrical installation licence for your unit if you do not have a separate electricity account with SP Services for that unit.

Only one electrical installation licence is required to cover the electrical installation in the entire building because of the en bloc purchase of electricity.

Tenants who held separate electrical installation licenses before the en bloc purchase of electricity will have their respective tenanted units covered under the electrical installation licence of the landlord/MCST of the building.

First, check if your company's Unique Entity Number (UEN) has changed after changing your company name. If it has changed, you should ask your appointed Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) to submit a new licence application because the installation licence is non-transferable.

If your company’s UEN remains the same, ask your appointed LEW to update the licensee’s name and apply for a replacement licence. The replacement licence costs $20 (excluding GST).
