- Four polytechnic students have been awarded this year's Energy-Industry Scholarship (EIS). They will join their respective sponsoring organisations upon completing their engineering diplomas. The EIS is intended to develop and nurture a pipeline of talent for the Power sector, and is open to both Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and Polytechnic students.
- The four recipients are Mr Lendl Yeo Ting Zhe and Ms Choo Wei Ming from Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Mr Muhamad Syahiran Bin Jamal and Mr Lim Kian Rong from Singapore Polytechnic. More information on these EIS recipients are in the ANNEX.
- Mr Lim, a Year 2 Electrical and Electronic Engineering student at Singapore Polytechnic, is glad his hard work has paid off. "Being selected by Senoko Energy for the EIS will help to reduce my family’s financial burden," he said, sharing that his electrician father is the sole income earner for the family of four. As a child, Mr Lim often accompanied his father on jobs. "I remember always asking my dad about every little detail of what he was doing as he fixed electrical appliances. I think this eventually sparked my interest in engineering as a career."
- Ms Choo, on the other hand, took up engineering in spite of her parents' objections. The Year 3 Diploma in Mechanical Engineering student from Ngee Ann Polytechnic shared that "they raised concerns that I would be a woman in what they saw to be a male-dominated industry". However, a keen interest since secondary school in how things worked compelled her to stay firm in her decision. "It took a few years, but my mechanical engineering knowledge equipped me to be the 'repair woman' at home. I believe the engineering concepts learned in school will also help me to build up tangible skill sets that I can apply at work when I join SP Group after my graduation."
- The EIS is co-funded by the Government and Power sector companies. The scholarship covers recipients' tuition fees, monthly living allowances, and a one-time allowance to purchase study-related items such as computers and books. Both full-term and mid-term scholarships are available to Singapore citizens or permanent residents pursuing relevant engineering courses. Applications for the next EIS cycle will open in December 2018.
- Since 2012, the Power sector has collectively awarded about 60 scholarships under the EIS, as well as under the Singapore-Industry Scholarship (SgIS) which offers undergraduate scholarships.
