EMA Reduces Compliance Costs with Lifetime Licensing Scheme

01 Jul 2014
Media Releases 01 Jul 2014

From 1 August 2014, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) will introduce a Lifetime Licensing Scheme for its licensed electrical, gas and cable detection workers. This move will help to save time and reduce compliance costs for more than 5,000 workers.

Currently, electrical, gas and cable detection workers have to renew their licenses every one to three years. The introduction of the lifetime licence could save up to $30 per year for each worker. They will also save time and enjoy greater convenience as there is no longer a need for them to renew their licences periodically (see Appendix for more details). Existing licensed workers will be converted to the lifetime licence when their current licences expire.

Mr Loh Wah Kay, a licensed electrical worker from M & P Consulting Engineers, said, “For licensed electrical workers, this new scheme is good as it saves us time and money. It is also convenient for us, now that our licence has no expiry date.”

Mr Tan Soo Hwang, General Manager of Swee Huat Heng Engineering Pte Ltd, who is a Licensed Gas Service Worker, supports the new scheme. He said, “The new licensing scheme will save time and reduce hassle for my workers, who don’t have to worry about forgetting to renew their licenses.”

The introduction of the lifetime licence is part of an on-going review by EMA to enhance its rules and licensing requirements to reduce compliance costs for businesses and consumers. Industry players and the public are invited to submit their feedback and suggestions to EMA at EMA_Enquiry@ema.gov.sg.
